ACADEMIC DIRECTOR POSITION
Yspaniola is a Dominican-American education nonprofit building a model of high quality education programs in Batey Libertad from pre-kindergarten through university. After creating successful programs in Batey Libertad, we will replicate our model in other bateys and marginalized communities in the Dominican Republic. Yspaniola’s vision is to provide graduates of our programs the tools they need to successfully advocate for themselves and their communities.

Currently, Yspaniola’s academic programming includes the operation of a community Learning Center, university scholarship program, and preschool programming. The Learning Center offers six classes per day, four days a week, providing supplementary instruction and tutoring in literacy and writing to children in grades 2 – 9. Our preschool program offers four early childhood classes per day and in total Yspaniola’s education programs provide academic services to 150 students, ages 3 to 17. Our university scholarship program provides full scholarships and academic support for 2 college students from Batey Libertad.

Responsibilities:
Yspaniola seeks an Academic Director to manage the effective implementation of curriculum and instruction and execute professional development and classroom support for Yspaniola’s local academic program staff. This position requires a two year commitment beginning in the fall.

The Academic Director will:
- Observe and assess education program staff; Provide coaching to instructional staff to ensure that teaching is intentional, engaging, and rigorous, and that teachers are creating a structured and responsive classroom culture with constructive responses to student misbehavior
- Work with the Learning Center Director to create, lead, and follow up on regular development workshops for Learning Center staff
- Support the lesson planning process and provide weekly feedback to teachers on their lessons
- Manage coordination of assessments and ensure consistency of implementation; manage systems to ensure the communication of individual academic progress to students and families
- Use teacher observation and students assessment data to continually evaluate and improve the curriculum and teacher support system
- Work with local teachers to organize meaningful events that engage parents and community
- Plan for and implement program modifications in response to upcoming changes to the local public school (tanda única)
- Manage an effective system for on-boarding new teachers and oversee training new teachers
- Assist in the planning and execution of the Batey Libertad Summer Camp
- Build smooth and efficient working relationships with staff that positively impact program outcomes; Work closely and efficiently with Yspaniola leadership and the Board of Directors to ensure smooth communication, maintenance of physical education program structures, and a positive working environment for all Yspaniola staff

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:
- Written and oral Spanish fluency
- Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field, Master’s degree preferred
- At least 2 years of formal teaching experience
- Experience designing or developing curriculum
- Experience supporting and coaching teachers, in an international setting preferred
- Experience with a variety of educational evaluation tools and data analysis
- Steadfast commitment to academic achievement for all children; commitment to supporting positive student behavior and social-emotional well-being
- Experience in primary education or early literacy preferred
- Belief in Yspaniola vision and values; Passion for community and asset based approaches to education and development
- Effective communicator with a high level of cross cultural sensitivity and excellent interpersonal skills; Experience working with a low-income community, either in the US or abroad
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- Sense of humor and a high level of flexibility
- Experience working with children with behavioral and/or learning disabilities preferred
- Familiarity with French or Haitian Creole a plus
