Yspaniola’s 2018 Documentation Project
For many of Batey Libertad’s students, and young people in other batey communities across the Dominican Republic, accessing legal documentation which proves their Dominican nationality, and therefore ensures their access to full citizenship rights, including schooling, can be a complex matter.
A Dominican High Court Ruling in 2013 retroactively stripped up to 200,000 Dominicans of their citizenship. This included many students, who may as a result be prevented from accessing education. This could have a devastating impact in their futures. Yspaniola will support students from Batey Libertad in this situation with our new, pilot project which tackles the challenge of obtaining vital legal documentation.
